The Long Tunnel
by richandfleur
The Durie Hill pedestrian tunnel, located opposite the Whanganui City Bridge, leads to the historic Durie Hill Elevator.
Built in 1919, it is the only earthbound elevator in New Zealand and one of only two in the world. A pedestrian tunnel leads 205 metres inside the hill to the elevator which rises 66 metres.

Cracking shot, really well put together... The need for a seat emphasises how long the tunnel must be...

Thanks all.
Put another way, using this elevator saves climbing the same height via 191 or so steps...
Today though, we did climb the stone tower at the top of the hill, so that was 176 steps with no elevator in that part! And then we came down the whole hill again via all the steps, but that seemed much easier!
I liked the shot, it seems very haunting I think, with the obvious perspective lines, but the foreground object draws attention, and seems well lit too. Glad everyone likes it

Very well thought through and taken. Bill has hit the nail on the head in his summary above.

Excellent shot. I like the way the lights take the eye down the tunnel. Gives the effect of a time tunnel.
