Personally, I really like this by-product and wouldn't normally take it out - it looks good and is 'natural'.

The star-burst is not an added effect - it happens when the lens is stopped down to a small aperture. I think this will happen 'automatically' with most lenses as the light hits the coinciding edges of the aperture blades. I think the effect would happen less with rounded blades, which seem to be appearing more and more in modern lenses (to help produce smooth bokeh).Great image, very well balanced!! Nice night shot, lovely low-key lighting. I like the sharp details around the lamp post.
