I can believe it Flan...should imagine years ago there would have been a lot less emphasis on H&S and proper training.
Spent quite a bit of time over the past 3-4 days watching the tree guy doing his job on two large trees and a smaller dead trunk plus lots of hedges and bushes lower down. I would estimate that only about 5-10% of the 'air time' was actually spent cutting or chainsawing...most time was spent adjusting his position and setting up between cuts, handling ropes etc whilst shouting down information, orders etc to the two guys below.
I'm hopeless on anything higher than a bungalow roof so never would have been the job for me.

I was working one time and the client was a retired tree surgeon who had worked all over England and Scotland, he told me that most of accidents and deaths were caused by the tree surgeon chainsawing the branch that they were sitting on by accident.
Frightening I know but one slip of concentration is all that it takes.
