Nantes used to be the most important port in France until around the beginning of the 19th century (and the apex of the slave-sugar trade triangle). The shipyards were still functioning until the early seventies. Almost half of the island between the two branches of the Loire river still running through Nantes was given up to shipyards and related activity. These big things are foundry furnaces. Mementos of the past. Nantes is also the birthplace of Jules Verne and the city wants to become - and is becoming - one of the SF and steampunk capitals of the world. Look up the Nantes Elephant, Machines, and Carousel. Cheers.

A marvellous bit of kit.
Best wishes,

There is also a steep cliff on one part of the loir "gorge" at the top of which is the Jules Verne Museum. They have very cleverly arranged it so you go down and down and down and down in a 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'
I like your furnaces
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
