Small Tortoiseshell

by Draken

I need help with this one folks.
Is this a Small Tortoiseshell or some other species?
Have a hard time finding it on the Internet with this colouring, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.
Or am I?

No you're not right I'm afraid!!! This is a COMMA, if taken recently it could be from an overwintering Imago, meaning it could be a second hatching from last year, the first hatchings are usually a lot paler but it's unlikely to be a first hatching yet I would have thought but I could be wrong. These lovely Butts are very flighty so you have done well to shoot one, and I like the way you have presented it too. Hope this helps.

Hey thank you Jacko,
And yes, he was a really hard catch with my 70mm lens.
Remember I had to chase it all over the wood to finally get this shot of him.
Took it last year and I think it was in August or so, so no first hatching.

Thanks for your input.
