I don't know how they test at the labs but, I've never had that much noise from my k-r even when I've over processed the pictures in photo shop.
Is your picture straight off of the camera ?

No, it has had the raw added about +1EV and sharpened a bit. I know that will add noise but not noticed that much noise before. The light was fading. In camera NR low. I was discussing this with a friend who came to the same conclusion as me that the noise remains low in good light at high ISO but increases rapidly in poorer light. (All cameras) . This is to be expected I guess as the signal to noise ratio drops. More to the point in a way is that are the lab testa representative of this?

Good capture all the same would love to just see one of these in flight let alone a chance to shoot it

I'm also a little surprised at the amount of noise Dave; I have done a number of shots with my K-x in fairly low light at 1250 ISO and they are virtually noise-free (see Goldfinch posted last night). I think you could get rid of much of this in processing, but not all. With regard to the photo it is a brilliant capture - very difficult to do this with the 55-300 lens; suprisingly I find it easier to take bird shots with an old manual focus 300mm prime.Considering the much vaunted low noise ability of the K-r I was surprised at the amount of noise in the sky in this shot taken at ISO 400. Are the lab tests taken in low light or just the same shot in good light at different ISO's?

I think you could get rid of much of this in processing, but not all.

Now is the best time (ever?) to see these as there has been a large influx from Northern Europe after a very successful season. There are places in Essex with as many as 10 flying around within in view! Feel free to message me if you want more info.
