Thanks both for your kind and carefully considered responses. This did make a nice monochrome shot, Giulio, and this is actually a blend of a colour and b/w layer to enhance the texture and colour.

Like the grain on the (Scots?) pine string. Piranha pine was used for staircase strings in my day. Stable & available in wide boards but smelt like cat's pee when you were working it! Came from a tree a little like a monkey-puzzle tree.
