Record Breaker
Percival Mew Gull aircraft dating from 1936, seen at Old Warden airfield, Bedfordshire on sunday. Part of the resident Shuttleworth Collection of vintage and historic aircraft.
Flown by Alex Henshaw in 1937, he won The Folkestone Trophy with a speed of 210 mph.
After modifications which included seating the pilot on the floor...Henshaw flew the aircraft to 236 mph a year later winning the 1938 King's Cup.
A year later on 5th February 1939, Henshaw set a new 'Out and Home' record flying between Gravesend and Capetown (and back) in just 4 days, 10 hours and 16 minutes...a record that stood for over 70 years.

Nice photo and excellent narrative. ......... How does the pilot see where he's going? Landing it must be fun!

Good point about the visibility...apparently the pilots have to weave from side to side a bit...really apparent when taxying on the ground.
Still goes very fast though...gave quite a spirited display.
