Victorian Masterpiece
by davidtrout
Not everyone can appreciate industrial design as artistic but Victorian engineers created works of great aesthetic appeal. This locomotive was the first of a new class designed for the Great Northern Railway by Patrick Stirling in 1870 to work the speeded up express service on England's East Coast Mainline. With eight foot driving wheels they could whizz along far faster than anything previously achieved by man - other than when falling off very tall buildings or high mountains.
The prototype 'Stirling Single' GNR No.1, is beautifully preserved and was wheeled out into the sunshine at Locomotion, the railway museum at Shildon, Co. Durham this last weekend.
I reckon it's one of the finest examples of industrial design ever produced in the UK. Feel free to disagree as beauty merely exists in the eye of the beholder.
Photographed Monday May 4 with a K5+DA*16-50mm lens.
