Ais Gill Summit

by davidtrout

Ais Gill summit on the Settle and Carlisle Railway at an elevation of more than 1,100 feet is the highest point on the line between Leeds and Carlisle. Its also the county boundary between North Yorkshire and Cumbria and a major watershed point in the Pennines. Streams and tributaries to the south run into the River Ure, down Wensleydale then into the Yorkshire Ouse and out into the North Sea via the Humber Estuary.
To the north the river is the Eden which runs north west to Carlisle and the Solway Firth in the Irish Sea.
Trains have a long climb (nicknamed The Long Drag) all the way from Skipton to this point, then a swift run down into the beautiful Eden Valley.
Here a Class 5 loco, named Sherwood Forester, tops the summit with the Fellsman charter train in August 2014.
I was a good half mile north of the summit. Using a 200mm lens I then cropped the image to emphasise both the heat haze and the sharp change in gradient at the summit. Is it a train picture, an abstract or a landscape?

Fantastic perspective David. Full of atmosphere and good steam emission for a Summer shot.

A very attractive and unusual shot. Heat haze at Ais Gill must be a rare occurrence in itself

If it grabs your attention it doesn't matter what handle you give it. Its a brilliant place, subject, scene and atmosphere.

Love the composition of this, the train in the distance is an alternative perspective and gives a different atmosphere

It really puts the summit in perspective too. I shall take a railway enthusiast's stance.
The comments certainly demonstrate that this is a picture to please *all* people.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

You've certainly made it look like a roller coaster ride! Love it!
