Ely Lantern Tower

by davidtrout

The unique lantern tower of Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire, looking directly up 142 feet from the floor to the centre of the tower ceiling. The original Norman stone central tower collapsed in 1322 and the new lead covered timber octagonal tower weighing 400 tons was completed 18 years later., a remarkable feat of medieval engineering which has survived almost 700 years.

Fantastic work - by the builders and the photographer.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
