For me this implies so much so therefor there is no indicator to what the issue is or th substance if any.

Leave's so much more to the viewer to decide ...atm this could be alcohol to drugs or just a simple nap ! it is all in the eyes of the beholder ..but just my opinion

IMHO I think it is, not because of the shadowy areas, but bec. of the back of the bench which is brighter than needed. May be you had to do it to lighten up the butts. It's a very beautiful and high quality B&W photograph!

The bench is aluminium & very shiny with strong afternoon light pouring in.
