Great decision to process this in black and white, it's a stunning portrait shot. 1/40 second is impressive for 300mm, if you were hand-holding with no camera support?

Right nice portrait with just enough other detail to give it context. It could be up there! I'd probably remove about 50% of the space above his head but that's just me. It is a beauty. Going to print I assume?

Yes David, handheld. From the angle of view at 300mm (it will be a bit less because it wasn't infinity) I reckon he must have been about 40 ft away, with DOF not much more than 1 ft. All down to good camera shake reduction, not my steady hand.
I don't know about, 'meticulously posed'. It was just a quick 'street shot' at the Ahrenshoop Regatta a couple of years ago, on the Baltic coast. I discovered it when trawling deep into the archive for a portrait.
I agree Nigel about losing some off the top, although it seems a bit less critical when you have a 3.4" white mount border. I was considering losing about 1/3rd, to make the gap similar to the hand to the RHS.
I'm not sure how well it will print as it stands. The eyes may turn out a bit dark, especially his left one.
