The light is coming from the left hand side which throws the front of the engine and the visible side of the carriages into shadow. Your meter mode was set the pattern usually a fairly safe bet but in this instance it has not copped very well. You needed an exposure to cater for both the highlights and shadows difficult when the train is moving! I guess that you should have set your meter to somewhere in the region of -2EV to capture some detail in the shadows. Your highlights would be shot but they are anyway as the steam has no detail in it. The pole or whatever it is that goes straight through the engine ruins the shot anyway. Bottom line is that you were standing in the wrong place.
Sorry but if you do not like the shot as is I would say it is beyond redemption.
