A typical example of Victorian, seriously formal architecture that can be seen in cemeteries, church towers and memorials all over the country. The style always reminds me of a Russian Soyus rocket with its huge boosters at the four corners - indeed Roger Dean once made an album cover painting of such a church tower blasting off in the form of a rocket ( "Ramases Space Hymns" ). The city fathers clearly refused to let the developers move it elsewhere so it now forms the incongruous scene that Simon has set before you.
Other local examples are the tower of Rugby School, the fountain in Jephson Gardens, Royal Leamington Spa and the parish church of St Andrews in Eastern Green, Coventry.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

A wonderful read. Thank you. I know the fountain in Leamington Spa; I must check out the other sites that you mention. This fountain was largely known for the addition of washing up liquid and the inevitable consequences.
