Cloth Hall by Night

by yelvertoft

Following the discussion in the General Chat area, I thought I'd post this picture of the Cloth Hall in Iper (Ypres). Though it is medieval in style, the whole town was utterly flattened in the 1914-18 war. After the armistice, the decision was taken to rebuild the town exactly as it had been prior to 1914, with the Germans paying for it, regardless of the cost. This is, a replica of the original cloth hall, it wasn't finally finished until the mid 1960s. Thankfully, they didn't have to start from scratch again in 1945.

Hope you don't mind me commenting seven months later! Ieper is a delightful town and its charm is heightened when you know the rebuild story. I'm just surprised that nobody commented when it was posted. Excellent shot.

Outside of the UK Ypres is our favourite place to visit.
I propsed to my wife at the Menin Gate, had our honeymoon in the town (and around the Salient) and one of my great uncles is buried just outside the town on the Menin Road.

This is a great picture and reminds me of the last time I saw the Cloth Hall....at night after visiting the bar next door.
