Llanberis Yard
by bwlchmawr
An increasingly rare sight on Britain's only rack railway: a steam hauled (or shoved) service to the top of Snowdon. The lovely old carriages have also been scrapped to be replaced by unconvincing replicas.
Only a few years ago it was possible to see up to four engines in steam, filling the air with thick brown smoke. Very atmospheric.
I think the accountants might be in charge now.

I was there back in May, mainly to photograph the Ffestiniog, WHR and Llangollen railways but I also popped across to Llanberis hoping to get photos of the mountain railway. I got one shot of a steamer in exactly the same spot that you have chosen here Andrew, but I was disappointed that all the other trains had diesel locos.
I like the atmosphere you've captured, you've nailed it just right.

Yes you have indeed nailed ONE atmosphere of such places and, personally I love it ....
but one needs to remember that, whereas the "Great Little Trains of Wales" are 100% heritage in their current incarnation, Snowdon Mountain Railway has never been anything more than a successful commercial enterprise. Some German friends recently praised the diesel for being clean and were pleased not be in front of the dirty steam engine.
