Further to my attempt at macro, I got a reversing ring to give it a go. mounted it to my 18 to 135 lens stuck the aperture open at f4 (with sticky tape), lens set at about 35mm,

You might try a macro bellows - the Pentax ones have a mechanism to release/set the iris. A cheaper alternative is the fairly common BPM Universal bellows unit. This looks a bit flimsy but it is actually anything but. You can also get a BPM focusing slider to go with it. Stick this pair on a tripod and there is little you can't photograph! You can put (say) Takumar lenses onto either, in which case, you focus wide open, flip the switch on the lens itself and the iris closes down -click -job done. Just stick 'bmp universal bellows' in your search engine.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
