Bathers

This seemed to look better in b/w though I'm still learning how to get the best from monochrome.

Wow, thanks everyone. It was bwlchmawr's photo of Love on a beach in Dorset, which I saw yesterday in the Gallery that inspired me to put this photo into b/w - a definite improvement on the colour version !

I don't think I've every inspired anyone before, Blaze.
If you switch between my (inferior) effort and this one, you'll see that your shot is much more contrasty as if, in the old days of film, the negative had been printed on a hard grade paper. I've gone for a softer more gently graduated range of tones with more shadow detail.
The original of my shot was very weak and wishy-washy which is why I converted it.
Chaque un a son monochrome,I suppose!

My original photo wasn't good enough to go for a softer look, which I think was more appropriate for your shot. Putting mine into a hard b/w style covers many sins including bad focussing!
Sometimes seeing what someone else has done in black and white triggers an idea.
Thank you anyway!

Wow, I love the light and strong contrast in this shot, well taken and converted, very much the type of mono style I like and strive for.

I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I really like the scene and it's a good contrasty b/w. However, there is an awful lot of camera shake going on here, which is a shame. I don't think it was necessary to go for f22.

I was using a tripod though the sand was still wet from the receding tide, which may account for the shake!
I still haven't quite got to grips with the f/stops yet but looking at my b/w posted today which was at f18, I see what you mean, Dr O. It's much sharper.
I'll just keep on trying!

I much prefer the one posted today (Thursday 13th) and agree with Dr O, but nevertheless I also like this shot for the contrast, lighting and composition. It's a real shame that there is shake on it. Also, I too wonder about the aperture, even the one today at f18. It would have been sharper all round at f11 and the lighting would have been the same. You clearly have an eye for composition. By the way, when using the tripod did you use the 2 second delay with mirror lock-up? If not, this may be why there is shake.I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I'm afraid I'm still a beginner in the technicalities so no, no time delay or mirror lock-up. I'll need to refer to the manual !
Many thanks for the tips - I'm not quite sure why I went as high as f22. I won't be making that mistake again.
These are the first shots I've taken of the sea, so there was some experimenting!
