High Gothic Initial Letter

by hocusfocus

This is photo of an initial letter I produced. It is based on Timothy Noad's High Gothic "S" as found in his book "The Illuminated Alphabet".

Wow - I'm impressed with your 'scripting' skills (if that's the right word!)

What size is the letter?

I'm a calligrapher, so I guess that would be "calligraphic skills." Letter is about 6" x 6".

Add that skill to some Celtic knotwork and stylised zoomorphics and the results would be worth seeing! Well done.

Thanks for that - I wondered if the right term was calligrapher, but wasn't sure!

Beautiful calligraphy, and the photographer, camera and lens have done a fine job of recording it.

A testament to the popularity of ancient Celtic zoomorphics & knotwork elements is demonstrated by their inclusion, here and there, in illuminated books even into the Rennaissance. Great Britain to this day retains its fondness for this kind of decoration, as your comment, Davidwozhere, reminds me.

What a super shot! Unfortunately the spots toward the top of the frame got my attention and won't go away!

Paul, you are quite right! I am not carefully-enough vetting my photos before posting. Thanks for noticing.
