I try and try; I take pic's that I think are gonna be good and when I look at them on screen I am so often disapointed and bin'em!

I do mean it. If you lack confidence you need to post more, not less. If your stuff is all as good as this...
What you've done here is hard: what I call an environmental portrait where both aspects work rather than conflict. trust me on this!

My photos are often so obscure or esoteric that people either loathe them (which is bad) or don't understand them (which is worse).

Have confidence: you own one of the best sub-full-frame digital cameras ever made (in my opinion)! Use it!
