Giulio57 - I am not a painter, but I recently, with the aid of a Photoshop plug-in, Topaz's SIMPLIFY, have been playing around with simplifying photo details and the shots turn out like oils and I have salvaged several 'missed' shots with some impressive results. They have free demos - Google Topaz.
