Trees on a Mound

So typical of the Lake District are trees growing out of mounds, sometimes Scots Pines and sometimes deciduous species as in this image. I would imagine they have been growing from the same mounds for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years.

Thanks for the comments everyone; I notice that the 'fan effect' has been mentioned and this is what drew me to take the shot in the first place. it wasn't just the clouds, it was also the shadows from the trees that seemed to accentuate the effect.
