The second day of our holiday took us into Pickering for the 1940s weekend. This is the Sunday and it rained. And rained. And rained. Did I mention it rained? However, K-1 and 50mm f/1.4 lenses were All Weather, so onward ho....How fantastic would travelling the USA in these be?

Unfortunately I can't, but I think the car may have been a Studebaker?

My uncle visiting from his home far away, gave me, a callow 8 year-old, $5 in 1949 (big money then) for washing his very dirty 1947 Hudson. I ran out and played a hose over the car till it was pure black, with no dust showing. This took maybe 3 minutes, after which I ran back into the house, palm out, asking for the promised $5. Incredulous at the impossibly rapid wash, he led me output to the yard and pointed to his Hudson which by this time had dried in the hot sun and was again showing all the original dirt. “Maurice,” he said, “you can’t wash a car by just spraying it with water!!” This was my first lesson in life on the virtue of putting elbow grease into your work.
