A hefty push
by davidtrout
Class 5 loco 'Eric Treacy' gave Flying Scotsman a massive push up the incline out of Grosmont with the first train of the day to Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Photographers lining the railway cursed because Flying Scotsman ran for hundreds of yards after starting with the cylinder cocks wide open. It totally obliterated the view with a cloud of superheated steam. But the Class 5 on the rear made up for it with a volcanic display of power that provided better pictures.

Terrific pyrotechnics.
Best wishes,

Superclag - love it!
How many did it have on to need a banker? (or were they afraid of breaking it)

Only eight coaches but the gradient is steep, somewhere in the 1 in 40s part of the way. It was also quite damp and the rails were greasy. The big wheel Pacifics don't handle too well on very steep climbs. I once saw Sir Nigel Gresley at the same spot spinning like mad trying to get a grip with just eight coaches.
Scotsman was not being pushed but the class 5 was really working hard and kept going into wheel spins which were expertly controlled by the driver.
Thanks for the comments all.
