I am a great lover of black backgrounds and in my opinion this is a stronger image for it. As for studio look, which I assume you don't favour because this is a natural object, see Tim Flach's "More Than Human"--- a stupendous tour de force featuring animals shot in the studio, many with dark backgrounds.
