Aglais urticae

That's the Small tortoiseshell, to you and me !
Seen on the bank of the Thames last week.
Didn't stay in one place for long so I didn't want to wait until I got close.
This is therefore a heavy crop from a shot using the Sigma 18-250mm at full zoom.
I had the K50 on TAv and 1/250s shutter speed as there was a breeze as well (just to make life that more interesting !)
It may be a common butterfly but we can't always be lucky and get the rare ones to 'pose' for us !

Hand held at that range is pretty good!
That looks like one of this year's, for all that it's very early. Either that or it never did a lot to get tatty last year.

This Sigma 18-250, with it's 'composite' body is quite light for it's range so is fairly easy to balance, even at full zoom.
When you are out walking with family it is not practical to carry a tripod so things HAVE to be taken hand held (whilst holding your breath !)
We have had some very sunny and quite hot days recently in the Thames Valley so I think this is probably one of this year's ?
