I do use Faststone already...find it great for tweaking images although i've not used the 'sliders'...they sound like they would be worth a try
compared to control via LHS of screen.
Must admit I wasn't expecting this image to look so good straight OOC and considering the bird was quite small in original image was delighted with the detail captured in its black plumage/feathers.

Slap in the middle of England
If you don't have it already, get it - Faststone Image Viewer - it's free.
Load the image, hit Ctrl+T and play with the 'shadows' and the 'contrast' sliders.
If you need sharpness, try Ctrl+U
If you don't want the keyboard controls, just shove your mouse against the left side of the screen! (or the top or the bottom).
