Reeve Aleutian
by pauljay
Over the last few months I have been scanning my aviation slides and this one stood out in the collection as being quite attractive, in addition to being just the normal kind of record shot required by aviation enthusiasts. Reeve Aleutian offered community passenger/cargo services within Alaska from 1946, until its failure in 2000, with a fleet that latterly included Lockheed Electras. This photo was taken on September 9, 1991 at Anchorage airport and on that same day Dick Reeve had given me authorisation to ride jump seat on another of the airlines's Electras from Anchorage to Saint Paul, in the Pribilof Islands, and return, an opportunity for me to experience a VOR arc approach - but that's another story.
The camera was probably an SFX with the kit lens.
I've now made a start on the many thousands of black and white negatives.
Paul.

Nice shot of a classic airframe/airline combo Paul. Out of interest what are you using to scan all your slides?

A great documentary shot, as Giulio says the colours are very true and the image has lots of atmosphere. It stood out in the Gallery thumbnails immediately.

Karlo, since I switched to the Mac a few years ago my Acer slider scanner has lain redundant. I was reading Amateur Photographer last summer (which day was that?) when I found a recommendation for the flatbed Epson V330 for slide and b&w film strip scanning. I investigated further and was quite pleased with what I read however, I couldn't get it into my head that I could get quality at such a low price. I got my V330 for EUR.90 and I have been amazed with the results it has produced. Thus, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
Many thanks David!
Nuri, for the time being I'm quite happy in the past! As somebody once said, "Don't live in the past, but don't forget it either"! Actually, it was me!
Thanks Giulio.

Cheers Paul. I started out scanning a load of colour 35mm slides a few years ago using a Canon 4400F flatbed. It has a slide adaptor for those and negatives but only takes about 4 or 5 at a time and is really slow and quite hard work getting everything just right. I ended up losing all my scans when my PC crashed a while back and I had to do a factory restore to salvage my machine. Haven't had the time or patience to start it all again...Hope your project works out better than mine. I do love the old prop jobs though, great sounds and real character. Used to love the 'whistle' that the Vickers Viscounts used to make when they flew overhead.
