Red Soldier Beetle

This little thing had just launched itself from the tip of the leaf, looking for a mate (which seems to be the only thing on their tiny minds for the short period they're around during the summer). The only way to snap them in flight is to recognise when one is about to take off (waving its antennae and opening its wings), manually focus just in front of it, press the shutter button and hope that it flies into the point of focus just as the shutter fires. Just two reasonable in-flight photos from several hours of trying spread over several days. If you think that birds in flight is tricky...
