Hi Robert, It is a fine attempt. Progress comes from playing around and experimenting. By using the light further back it will reduce the light on the person (if that is what you wish). Always make sure the person is as static as possible and the camera is very well stabilised. One trick I have used is to attach a clear plastic film cannister to the end of the torch. This diffuses the light but also means that the torch doesn't have to be pointed directly at the camera so harshness can be reduced.

I hope this helps and would love to see some further attempts.... Just have fun with it.
