Have you tried a square crop? It helps with the dark area but I'm not sure if you loose the relationship between the bridge and the landscape

Funny you should say that Barrie, I was actually using my square (6x6) format Yashica 124 Mat to take the original pics, but took a few (of which this was one) with the *istD as backup (and colour) in case they didn't turn out
