First time I've tried the D FA 150-450 with the SMC F 1-7x AF adaptor - wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised

That adapter is no slouch. Don't go equating it with your average rear converter !

Next time Lenny, take about 30 to 40 images. Then stack them. You'll get a more detailed image.
