I'd capture this (in RAW) with f5.0 , EV -1, ISO 800, ET 1/3200s (that means on TAV mode and with ISO upper limit set on 800) .. so that would entail a bit more sharpness and less noise, and that's without significative DOF loss on bird; .. just an idea

Nice picture but Nuri's comments have nudged my brain into action and I realise I don't know the difference between 'manual' (it does what you tell it to do) and TAV (it does what you tell it to do). In fact, I appear to have deliberately ignored it because I don't understand it

I do believe it was taken on TAV mode with auto ISO (max 3200). The aperture and shutter speed were set by me and it was a heavy drizzle at the time and it was a lot darker than the picture looks. The exposure was adjusted in Photoshop. I set the shutter speed to freeze the bird in flight and stopped down a bit as I often find not all of the subject is in focus on a fully open aperture . The only thing I did wish was it was taken in RAW but as sports is my main hobby I very rarely use RAW and forget to change it from JPEG when taking a change of subject matter. David, in M mode you can choose ISO range [ISO AUTO] but it won't be operative; only you can fix its level via "ISO" button. Therefore, IMHO, TAV mode has some advantages over M mode as for the effectiveness of noise and EV managements. Maybe the subject is worth to be discussed in PU forum.
