Humming bird hawk moth
by HowardJ
Taken this afternoon in next door's garden. Never seen one so close before.
How could I have "stopped" it's wings? Should I have done?

You may have had a chance at 1/8000th but you would have had to open the aperture so wide you would have so little in focus because of the shallow DOF or sent the noise levels through the roof by pushing up the ISO.
like this you get the sense of movement and as such it is a great shot.

Thank you both for your replies, much appreciated.
I must admit I like it as it is.
Cheers,

Well captured Howard.
They're not easy to catch.
Kind regards

No, they are not easy. I've gone to 1/1250th sec and that doesn't freeze the wings. So, my view is don't try. Have a look at DrOrloff's portfolio for a good selection of his excellent efforts (though he claims they are only "so-so." :lol

Great shot Howard. I've never seen one of these moths - what part of the country are you from?

Well taken shot, nice colours and sharpness. I like its moved-in wings.
