Horse fly. (Tabanus bovinus)

The biggest damn fly I've ever seen!!! it was at least 1" long, taken this morning at home,.... very carefully.

That's a teeny one you should see ours in Spain, if I could get one to stay still that is, but I think it is a bee of some kind, flies don't have stripes

Sorry to disagree Jackitec but bees have 4 wings, and longer antennae, no it IS a fly, as far as stripes are concerned there are several flies with 'em, ie hover flies and other Diptera species, plus those compound eyes could only belong to a fly!!!
