Hawk

by actech12

I've been following the hawk for a few weeks now, on Southwick Hill in Sussex. I'm hoping to get some better shots as my skill improves with the big Sigma lens.

Hi - nice shot. Do you have any focusing issues with the Sigma on the K-5.? On my K-r it hunts in all the time with distant shots, even with good contrast.

Hi dcweather, sometimes if I'm not centered on the subject and there is a big difference between subject and background it just plain refuses to focus. I then find if I zoom wide and refocus it sorts itself out. I also find using the single point focussing more reliable, otherwise it's hunting between different focus points (such as the branches in this photo).

I agree very nice shot of a very difficult bird to photo, as soon as I lift the the camera to focus they are usualy off like a rocket.

Thanks David, you wouldn't believe the number of times I went up and down the hill and through the fields to get it (the dog was in his element!). Still not 100% happy with it though, but a good excuse to get out more.

Dave
I know how long it takes to get near these birds let alone photograph them with a dog in tow.
I doubt any photographer is ever totally happy with their photos, that’s one of the joys of it. There’s always another day and another chance to get out and take an even better photo.

Thank David, but just like toast always seems to fall butter side down, why do we always miss the best shots on the one day we don't have the camera handy?!
