Fading away

by RobL

The title reflects how, as the memory of a person fades into history, so does their final recorded details get eroded by the passage of time. I particularly liked this example in a North Cornwall churchyard carved on slate, with the lovely 18th c lettering and patterns of lichen.

Shot with pixel shift, and the framing finely tuned using the composition correction which manually tweaks the sensor so that I just left a small margin around for accurate cropping afterwards.

I'm very close to your pic and example...A few months ago I took the photo of gravestone of my grand grand mother...died Sept. 3th, 1893. It had same troubles of stone you have taken a pic of. Your words well depicts "as time goes by"sentence. No one inside my family knew where, when, why my GGMother died. My father has never known his grandpa and grandma(from the side of his father)..........After many years I have been able to find the cemetery and documents about death of these two peoples.....About GGPa we thought about a suicide but a few "peoples"suggested me a strange theory: murder.....Anyway in documents(discovered in an Church Archive) regarding my GGPa I read "sudden death": murder or suicide?By the way he died May, 2th, 1894.....9 sons remained alone(among these there was my grandpa).....Sorry for this real story.

Don't be sorry about your real story Giulio. Although everything does fade to oblivion in time, there is often a lingering importance of the memory to someone, somewhere. This wonderful image has very successfully illustrated both of these points - one from what we see and one from what we have read - from you.

So frustrating trying to read gravestones when they're covered in lichen or when the weather has eroded the stone! Makes an interesting shot though Rob. Interesting story Giulio!
