Crohy Head
by mcrtchly
Days when you get all your ducks in a row! We had been waiting for weeks to get this shot of the Bristí Sea Stack (also known as the Tullard Breeches) at Crohy Head, Co. Donegal. The tide had to be going out to allow us safe access to the beach, and the weather needed to offer some fire in the sky at sunset. After a clamber down a 60m steep, muddy gully, at the bottom of which we were glad we had brought along a rope, we made our way along the boulder strewn shore which was still being lashed by the outgoing tide, to a vantage point where we could see the hole in the base of the stack. There was excellent energy in the receding tide, and the sky momentarily lit up at sunset right behind the hole in the arch. Donning waders allowed me to get close to the action and capture the incredible seas in a single shot. A real 'Wild Atlantic Way' shot, well worth the dunking Sharron, my partner, got when she slipped on the rocks and fell into the drink!!!!

You were so lucky! Last time I was in Donegal there was a calm sea, grey sky, grey sea and grey land! Brilliant shot.

Thanks for the kind comments. It's a great place if the weather conditions are good (which is rare in Donegal, as Anthony has alluded to). It a bit of dangerous descent to the beach (but thankfully I'm used to 100m+ drops in caves and old mines on ropes). The worst parts are the incredibly slippery rocks in the tidal zone. Incidentally nearby was a talc mine which was worked intermittently until 1947 and miners would have gone past here to access some of the workings at low tide.
