I have a love/hate view of these birds.... as a British alien they shouldn't really be here... perhaps this winter reduced their numbers in the UK.
They visit our allotments here in Leeds [no-one is really sure where the roost is, but they've been seen near the University and as far as the allotments at Otley] They can cause severe damage to fruit crops when they visit in number! But the occasional visit is not to bad!?!?
This year I reached up for a particularly nice looking James Grieve apple from our tree "to get it before the parrots" only to find the usual parrot-bill shaped gouge out of the upper surface!! The swines [oops, sorry, villanous boidz!!]
