Cold war

Frosty 08:53 at Woodbridge Airfield, Suffolk

Pentax K-5 II s
Pentax DA 18-250mm @ 50mm f/8.0

I couldn't squeeze the lens through the wire fence so decided to include it in the shot, so as to convey the illicit nature!

I plonked on the old 18-250mm as I needed something wider than the DA* 50-135mm I'd brought for the husky racing in Rendlesham Forest. I'd forgotten how good it can be, given it's a compact 'travel zoom'. It used to be my most used lens, prior to the 16-85mm.

Woodbridge Airfield is located on the edge on Rendlesham Forest. There's a plaque in the forest car park explaining that RAF Woodbridge formed part of NATO’s defence during the Cold War and how the F-101 Voodoo aircraft of the USAF’s 81st Tactical Fighter Wing could be loaded with a single atomic weapon for the one way trip to the target.

It looks like it is in front of the runway of "an airport near you" but it's a very good interpretation, ably assisted by the mesh fence
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Firstly, this is a shot just like I love it.
Great foreground and very nice symmetry.

Now to some criticism; Why don't you , and some others who don't think it is needed , make some comments about the image.

Where it was taken what lens was used etc.

People who look at it may like to know.

regards, Horst

Point taken Horst. It was a long day and I was being lazy. I also forget that the Gallery doesn't show full EXIF information. I've just edited with a little bit of info.

I was drawn to the statement about the F101, a fighter aircraft, delivering a nuclear weapon but indeed the F101A/C was designed to do just that. I shall be in that area, RAF Bentwaters, in April to visit the Cold War Museum. I'm sure I read once that Bentwaters and Woodbridge were once connected by a taxyway but Google Earth shows no sign of it. Interesting set of approach lights, leading to a super wide runway!
