Bittern at York

Cliff P and John W have posted pictures of steam specials on the main line today. Here is my version. The A4 class steam loco Bittern, repainted into the blue colour of the late 1930s and carrying the name and number of a long scrapped sister engine, Dominion of New Zealand was on the East Coast Main Line with the first stage of the Great Britain IV tour train from London to Newcastle. Here it is restarting its heavy charter train from the York stop.

Doesn't she look good as 4492, much prefer the A4`s in LNER blue to BR green. I believe 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley took over the train at Newcastle, bet there was a bit of whistle blowing going on there David.

Unlike Cliff I dislike the LNER blue and like to remember A4s the way that I saw them in the late fifties - emerging from Gasworks Tunnel to enter Kings Cross in BR green, albeit a tad scruffy at times. And I hate those (borrowed?) side valances!

Sorry to say it Paul but this is the way the A4s were meant to be - Garter Blue with side valances. And for me that's just fine. The first four were painted silver to work the Silver Jubilee, another batch were apple green but Sir Nigel Gresley had them all painted Garter Blue with stainless steel trim by the late 1930s.
Silver Steaks, yes, Blue Streaks, yes. But Green Streaks? Do me a favour.
