Barnetby Glint

by sportyman531

This scene is set to change forever after Christmas due to the semaphore signals and signalboxes being replaced by colour light signals controlled remotely. It is well known that at this time of year the low sun can produce such spectacular lighting at this location, it's just a case of being there at the right time, not that easy when you live 100 miles away!
Freightliner 'Shed' 66 419 heads 4R18, the 14.15 Doncaster Down Decoy-Immingham Import Terminal coal empties, across Wrawby Junction, Barnetby.

Me too! The lighting is spectacular. A real shame that the semaphores are going - they add so much to an image like this. (Although I do understand the need to update!)

Thanks Andy, yes, the glint shot will still be on but without the "railway furniture" it just won't be the same.

Beautiful light, I love the 'glint' on the train. Interesting to see the change in gradient on the railway at this location.
If you were 100 miles away were you using an extremely long lens or is this a massive crop?

No - he used a remote release !
Good thing too if it results in shots like this

I love semaphore and traditional signal boxes. This a lovely, soon to bee, nostalgic shot.
Best wishes,

Andrew

Excellent shot. Like the balance of light and shadow.

Thanks David, it could have been taken by a drone with long distance fuel tanks or a well trained eagle with a helmet cam but it was nothing so exotic!

As I am sure you are aware semaphores and signalboxes are disappearing fast on the national network, get 'em while you can! Thanks Andrew.

Soon we'll just have to use "train sets" to simulate how it was in the old days. I like this shot and both my guesses were wrong as to who had taken it. Lovely

Hopefully, although I have no "inside" knowledge, these will be going to some preservation society or other. Over the next few years most remaining semaphores on Network Rail will disappear and all signalling will be controlled from about 12 signalling centres around the country. So, the answer is visit your local preserved railway!
Thanks Stan.

It's amazing just how many semaphores still exist! Gorgeous shot of a class 66, I believe it is.

There is a list in one of the magazine of what's going and when, just for the record this is 66 419 passing Wrawby Junction heading towards Immingham in the late afternoon on 25th November but it's the lighting that matters here. Thanks Paul.
