Lovely image, although photographing these seals is somewhat controversial these days. The pup mortality rate has gone up 8x and it is believed to be due to too many photographers getting too close. http://terrywhittakerphoto.blogspot.com/2010/02/donna-nook-seals.html

Tim, If i may correct you on that point, At the site where this was taken there is a strict control on 'viewing availability' In otherwords access to 'sensible persons' is restricted behind a patrolled fence'

The birth/survival rate increases each season, and THE actual reality of people 'encroaching' on to the Pupping area is in fact minimal. Of course there are idiots who do this. but in reality this does/has little effect. The Seals co-exist within a Military Bombing Range, and have done for many years with the 'Pupping Numbers' increasing as each year goes on. So I am not sure where the figure of 8X's Pup mortality is derived from? Even more so where the 'Factual' belief of Photographers being the cause of the is derived from?

You may be able to provide more information on this source?

I will agree that of recent the incidence of 'commercialiasm' is creeping in, and needs controlling. I appreciate the report that you refer to, however this does not appear to be factual to the wardens that we speak to when we visit.

I would also be interested in these facts from the site that you quote? If they are remotely factual then, I for one would wish to be instrumentual in trying to preserve the privacy of these wonderful creatures.

Kind Regards

Paul

The average visitor to this site 'remains behind the fence'

Where does ''''Professionalism''' go after this??????????????

Let me quote a partial comment from this report: -

"More formal controls" may be needed to protect seals at the Donna Nook colony, where professional photographers leading photo workshop groups are among those ignoring requests from wardens not to shoot on the beach, the head of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has revealed.

Speaking to PhotoRadar, the Trust's Chief Executive Paul Learoyd said that 500 people this year have ignored the Trust's request not to go beyond the fence and photograph seals on the beach at Donna Nook's outer colony.

"This figure is a disappointment but a great improvement on last year," he told us. "Many of these people were attending paid workshop group visits with professional photographers."

Sorry Paul, didn't realised you had replied here, but it looks like from your 2nd post you've found more details confirming that the authorities are indeed, rightly or wrongly, blaming pro photographers. it does seem to single photogs out somewhat, there must be tens of thousands of 'normal' visitors compared to a relative handful of photographers. I don't know who is correct, which is why I said 'controversial'
