It's actually not too bad, the main idea of it being "Our" camera and letting her be heavily involved in picking it was to get her to buy into the idea of using it. Once she's addicted then her desire to use it will hopefully mean I can upgrade and get another one
Interestingly when on holiday (the primary reason for the investment) just having the one camera works just fine since I normally carry it (in a Tamrac Velocity 6 with the other lens) and we swap over every so often.
She likely wouldn't want to carry it all the time due to the weight.
I think she might appreciate the FA 50 too due to the smaller size and weight...

I have this item, its OK for compacts but not stable enough for the SLR after a few weeks use and the links have loosened up, but the K200D, a Tamron 17-50 lens may be lighter than my set up (K10 and pentax 18-250 at the time). I set it up and by the time I was ready to take the shot it had drooped...... May be I will feed it some viagra!

welcome to the forum, been on here 6 months, great bunch, and srs are a good place to buy from. I don't have the SLR gorillapod but i'd say you'll find it inadequate, my brother in law has one and a canon 400d which is featherlight compared to pentax and he thinks it's inadequate for him. The 50mm 1.4 is very very good and highly recommended, pretty much all my best people shots have been on that, low light pics of my children, and continous mode of them running towards me, it refocusses in between shots really well. Hoya CPL filters are on Ebay all the time, you might find you save some pennies there.

I went personally to SRS and tried the gorillapod SLR tripod and wasn't happy at all. Then had a go at the SLR zoom one and was extremely happy with it. Thats the one I have been using at home. Its versatility is fantastic, the way you can really manipulate and twist it is absolutely great . I pushed it to the limits and even gave it to my little one to play and he thought it was a puzzle ha . And the price difference is just £5 if I am not mistaken, so I would recommend that one instead.
Been using the 50mm f1/4 and even as a newbie all I can say about the lens is WOW. Been snapping just around everywhere and the shots are crisp sharp and unbelievably clear. I am just waiting to get some images of decent subjects to upload and show them off, it makes even a newbie like me feel that I have a bit of grasp already in the matter

Having fun, first DSLR - sharing it with the gf (she's primary reason for picking it, she tried a few in the shop and liked that one)
In-camera IS is great for my shaky hands too

What I am planning on buying (in order of importance)

Joby Gorillapod SLR Tripod £34.99
Any thoughts on this. I wanted a fast prime for portraiture mainly (also the small size) since I found the tamron was nice during xmas for pics but was a we bit too big and I was distracting them when I wanted unstaged shots.
The FA 77 looks wonderful (I had a play in the shop) but this is waaaay too much for me right now.
The CPL is for snowy scenes primarily (about to go out to the Alps) and wanted to try it, they aren't cheap sadly (so I'm only getting one for the Tamron which I think I am most likely to use for the landscape shots)
The gorillapod is likely for holidays - gets shots of me and the GF at the same time or just use it to avoid my horrible shakes (did I mention that already). I figure that one should take the K200 + tamron.
