the 5D is full frame, which pushes the price waaaayyyyyy up
making a silicon chip that big is expensive which accounts for some of it, and Canon know they can charge what they like for full frame and some people will pay it.

Yes, the 5D is full frame and capable of superb results. But - most suggest you need to use "L" glass to get the best. And that's full frame "L" glass with a full frame price tag
And the weight
...I did also hear that Canon sell the 5D at an unprofitably price, and make it up with the lenses

I just stumbled across an eBay purchase here in Canada for a Cannon 5D 12mp - body only.
Over 3 Grand!!!
Admittedly it's three grand Canadian, but Geeesh! And now he's gotta buy new Cannon digital lenses for it!
And I was worried that the K10D was expensive!
OK, I haven't been shopping outside of the Pentax family, and thus my shock I guess but, come ON!
I'm afraid to look into Nikon!
Another lesson learned....
