It's not only rain, but salt air exposure and blown sand which when it gets into a camera wreaks havoc.
Of course we get our fair share of rain and it is a sobering experience to see how little exposure to rain a camera needs to stop working.
I nearly lost my beloved Panasonic FZ150 two years ago because of rain ingress.

It just shut down completely without any warning whilst shooting in a rain shower and even though the camera was covered by a plastic bag the rain managed find its way in. Thankfully it came back to life but I heeded the warning.
I did look long and hard at your lens, the reviews I read were glowing, but I would always be on edge when out in inclement weather with a non WR lens.
Someone once quipped about Lewis that we get "nine months of bad weather and three months of winter" - fells like that today with sleet sliding down the windows.
