Exactly this. It's probably the soultion and you can't do it any harm as long as you use a decent screwdriver and take care. I'm not sure if the best screwdriver would be a JIS or a standard Philips-type. Do relatively modern DSLRs and lenses still use JIS?

I use JIS drivers (a Vessel #0000 to #1 set) with my K-70.

Thank you for your comments, I assume there must be a cover on the hot shoe because I cannot locate any screws.

There are two parts to the hotshoe - there may be a decent video tutorial on how to disassemble one.
There's essentially a small 'shaped' bit of metal that covers the screws. To remove it you need a very small flathead screwdriver or prying tool. That fits into a tiny notch between the top left empty contact and the top right metal contact as you look at the hotshoe from the rear. Once you get leverage on the metal plate to lift it slightly, you'll see it can be pulled back over the contacts to remove it.
At that point you can try and tighten the screws gently. The KP and K-1 have a plastic prism cover but I'm not sure whether the K3iii is the same.
