so is a wide angle no good for landscape photography????
Wide angle lenses are good for landscape photography as are say 30mm to 50mm prime lenses. It all depends on what you want to photograph.

For instance relections love the sigma 10-20mm' normal landscapes i would use a DA16-45mm lens which is more than capable.

Emma, if your budget is tight, the Pentax 18-35mm would be a good choice. It isn't the best lens Pentax ever made, but it's not too bad, and will give you a feel for the subject without spending too much.

After using it for a while you might then find that you want something wider, or perhaps longer. But you will then be buying with the confidence that comes from experience.

Emma
I was in a similar position some months ago, in that I wanted a lens that would be a step-up from the Tamron 18-250, image quality wise.

The superb advice I gained, both from this forum and elsewhere, convinced me to keep the 18-250; yes, possibly I would notice some improvement with lenses such as the Pentax 16-45 (amongst others), but would the cost be justifiable?

Why not purchase a lens which allowed me to do things which I currently couldn't? I took this advice and bought a used Sigma 10-20; what an amazing lens!

It's not the fact that you can cram more detail into a shot, but the fact that it opens up a whole new dimension to the images that you can take. It's amazing as to how close the subject is at times (I've even managed to capture my own shadow on sunny days).

In a nutshell the Sigma is an excellent lens for landscapes, whilst also opening a totally different dimension.

My Flickr page has a dedicated section for this lens.

Regards.

Hi Emma,

My suggestion would be, if possible, to try out an UWA such as the Sigma 10-20 before buying one. I recently sold mine as personally I didn't find it nearly as useful as I expected for landscape shots..

the problem is that scenery becomes distant making strong foreground elements even more important, whilst this doesn't sound a bad thing I found that as a result the foreground often became the main subject..this didn't really suit my own personal "style" of shots. I wasn't too keen on the inevitable distortion that UWA lenses produce either. I find that most of my shots are in the 17 - 25mm focal range
