One of the adverts on the side bar stated:-

Pentax 43mm F1.9 £349
*Free Delivery! Shipped from UK* In Stock Now for Same Day Dispatch
SimplyElectronics.net/Pentax

The link was this.

I clicked, and . . . the lens is not only twice this price, but out of stock.

Haardly a high quality advert to be displaying here, is it?

Actually those are Google Adsense contextual adverts. They are adverts which display based on the context. So if the text on the page is talking about blue handled widgets, the adverts will be about blue handled widgets (this is of course assuming that a BH widget company has already bid on the key phrase of 'blue handled widget').

Competitive words, like 'insurance', will get bid on by many hundreds of advertisers. The highest bids get displayed first, until the advertsiers monthly budget runs out. Then the next highest bids get displayed. etc etc. So you can see that it is almost impossible to predict which advert will display.

They aren't put there by the hosting company, the PentaxUser web team puts them there. Google pay out for every person who clicks on the ad. The amount ranges from a few pence up to several pounds per click. Words like 'insurance' and 'loans' etc pay out big time. Niche stuff pays a few pence. In this case UI would imagine the keyword is 'pentax'.

It is possible for the webmaster to block certain adverts (usually you would block your competitor's ads), so the web team could in theory block Simply Electronics. They have a pretty shabby reputation anyway from what I understand.

Edit: In summary ... every time you click on Simply Electronic's advert it costs Simply Electronics 10p or 20p or so. No, I'm not suggesting anything

For instance while I was writing this I noticed that while most of the ads on this page are about pentax, one of the ads is for 'Cardiff Airport Parking'. That one is picking up Cardiff_gareth's name, no doubt the advertiser (NCP) has bid on the keyword 'cardiff'.

Grab a screen shot of the advert next time.

Call them up and record them refusing to sell to you at the advertised price. Then get the local trading standards office on to it. Maybe te ASA too.

It may take your time but they will be tied up having to explain why they make false advertising claims.

edit to add

Simply Electronics may be a Hong Kong Company, but they have a UK phone number and must have a UK base as they state the items are in stock an will be shipped from there so they cannot avoid local laws and authorities. The UK warehouse will probably be paying various customs and delivery charges and the cost of renting the UK facility.

I have purchased twice from Simply Electronics, via Amazon, and there was no problem either time. Goods were sent promptly from within the UK.

Mine are too Jack but when I have a VPN connection to my UK server, the ads change to English.
